In September 2007 we decided to fulfil the promise we made in Epcot, Florida just after we met, namely to visit China.

We took 750 photos, so as you can imagine it's been very difficult to weed out a small selection for this webpage. It was a fantastic holiday and we'd certainly recommend it. Given our love of cruises, we were particularly pleased to find one itinerary which included an 8 day cruise down the Yangtze river.

Day 1: Yu Gardens, Shanghai - inspired the willow pattern

Shanghai skyline at night...

...and during the day (Day 2)

Day 3: Nanjing - Dr Sum Yat Sen Mausoleum at Purple Mount - 392 steps to the top!

Proof that we made it up those steps!

I stopped for a small cup of soup on the way up.

Day 4: Mount Huang translated as Yellow Mountain

Day 5: Wuhan - Hubei Provincial Museum

Days 6-8: Three Gorges

The Three Gorges Dam

Boat trip through the Lesser Three Gorges - Neil models the local fashion!

Evening entertainment on the cruise

Day 9: Feng Du or 'Ghost City' - 600 steps to the top - and, unlike some who got the chair lifts, we walked!

Oh Neil!

Day 10: After a 5 hour coach trip from Chongqing to Chengdu, we relaxed at the local theatre

A hand puppet owl - one more for Mum's collection!

Day 11: Wolong Nature Reserve - the protected home of some of the world's endangered Giant Pandas - so relaxed, not a care in the world

Day 12: Terracotta Army in Xian - over 2200 years old - the place was so incredibly vast - and this was just one of the pits

A fearsome warrior!

Xian city wall

Day 13: shopping & travelling to Beijing. Day 14: Tiananmen Square - preparations underway for the approaching festival

Theresa in front of the Forbidden City

The start of a very long walk

9,999 rooms plus a half (God has 10,000 and the Emperor can't have as many as God)

Imperial Garden where many a concubine spent their days - the Emperor could have up to 5,600 concubines

Rickshaw ride round Hutong town

Others in our group - Hi, Margaret!

At the end of a visit to a local house we all pose for a photo of our tour group with our hosts - plus their pet grasshoppers & crickets!

A pretty lake near Opium Street

Practising their moves for the approaching festival at the Temple of Heaven

Spot the Olympic rings!

The Hall of Prayer for Great Harvest - the Emperor would go there to pray for a good harvest, water and give thanks for the harvest

A local acrobatic show

Day 14: The Great Wall of China - aka The Great Staircase of China!

Neil got a fair way up!

The Summer Palace

A squished baby

Just playing!

Marble boat

The 'birds nest' - Beijing's Olympic stadium

Theresa test drives her Christmas present from Neil a little early and Margaret gives her panda impression on Neil's lap!
